Task Response
The candidate addresses the prompt by describing the Tang Dynasty and giving some reasons for wanting to learn more about it, such as the presence of the first female emperor and interest in her leadership. The response also mentions poets and cultural achievements. However, the development of ideas is limited, with some repetition and lack of depth. The position is clear but not fully developed, and supporting arguments are somewhat superficial. The response is relevant but lacks sufficient extension and support for a higher band. This fits Band 5, as the main parts of the prompt are incompletely addressed and development is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion
The response is organized with an introduction, some main points, and a brief conclusion. There is some attempt at paragraphing (with 'Then talking about why...'), but the progression is not always logical. Sentences are sometimes loosely connected, and there is repetition of ideas (e.g., mentioning the female emperor multiple times). Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes inaccurate ('In that time, all of emperor were male'). The writing can be followed, but the flow is not smooth. This fits Band 5, as there is some organization but it is not wholly logical and there is repetition and limited use of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource
The vocabulary is generally simple and sometimes used inaccurately ('a little interesting in this now', 'shooting to the TV series'). There is some attempt to use topic-specific words (e.g., 'emperor', 'poets', 'leadership'), but the range is limited and there are frequent errors in word choice and form. Some phrases are awkward or incorrect, but the meaning is usually clear. This fits Band 5, as the resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task, with frequent lapses in appropriacy and some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
The response contains frequent grammatical errors ('i do nor know the actually year', 'there was a lots of poets', 'This book have been shooting to the TV series'), and sentence structures are often simple or faulty. There are some attempts at complex sentences, but these are not always successful. Punctuation is inconsistent, and errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. This fits Band 5, as the range of structures is limited and errors are frequent, causing some difficulty.
Improvement Suggestions
Your answer covers the main points but needs more development and clearer explanations. Try to expand on your reasons for interest in the Tang Dynasty, giving more specific examples and details.
Work on organising your ideas into clear paragraphs—one for describing the period, another for your reasons. Use linking words like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Finally' to improve flow.
- Expand your vocabulary by learning synonyms and more precise words.
- Check your grammar, especially subject-verb agreement and sentence structure.
- Practice writing more complex sentences and avoid repetition.
Question:
Describe a period in history that you would like to learn more about. Give your reasons.
Answer:
Well i would like to describe a period in history that i want to learn more about. It is Tang Dynasty. When i studied in middle high school, I learned something about this period in history class. Although i do not study it in the high school, i am a little interesting in this now. This Dynasty is about 1000 years ago, i do nor know the actually year. In this Dynasty, there was a first female emperor, called WuZetian . In that time, all of emperor were male, i think she was famous as her experiences and leadership, so she could be the emperor. In addition, there was a a lots of poets, like LiBai , DuFu . They wrote a loads of poems, like JingYeSi , JueJu . In china all people can recite these poems. When children are 6 years old, if they can recite lots of Tang poems, the parents are proud of this. Next, in this period, there was writer Wu Chengen who wrote a book called the journey to west . It was talking about four persons wanted to obtain the information of Buddhism. This book have been shooting to the TV series . Finally, i also know there were four beautiful women in hind time , they were called YangYuhuan, DiaoChan, XiShi and WangZhaojun . In that period, people thought the women who were a little fat was the most beautiful.
Then talking about why i want to learn more about it. As i mentioned, in this period there was a first female emperor, so i really want to know why she could be the emperor, and learn something about her leadership.
